Choosing your first car
Insurance comes first
For a new driver, insurance is usually the biggest cost of running a car — often more than the car itself each month. Check the insurance group, and get quotes on two or three cars before you choose. Ask us for the registration of any car here and we’ll send it, so you can get an exact quote.
A small engine keeps costs down
A 1.0 to 1.4-litre petrol is usually the cheapest to insure, tax and fuel, and is plenty for town driving and the motorway. Superminis like the Fiat 500, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra and MINI are popular first cars for exactly this reason.
History matters more than the badge

What makes a good first car?
A low insurance group, a small engine, low running costs and good visibility. It should be easy to park and reliable — superminis such as the Fiat 500, Toyota Yaris and Nissan Micra tick all of these.
What insurance group should a new driver look for?
Groups run from 1 to 50 — the lower the group, the cheaper insurance usually is, and the low teens and below is a sensible place to start. Always get a quote before you commit: ask us for the registration of any car and we’ll send it over.
Can I get finance on my first car?
Finance is available subject to status — the lender decides based on your circumstances. You can get a no-obligation quote online for any car, and we’re happy to talk you through the options.
Can I bring someone with me to view the car?
